Alberta is Canada's energy province. In 2016, Alberta produced about 80 percent of Canada's crude oil. Alberta is home to one of the world's largest unconventional oil deposits, the oil sands, bu the province's diverse resource portfolio also includes natural gas, conventional oil and minerals.
Canada's oil reserves are estimated at 172 billion barrels ( 24 billion tons) at the beginning of 2015. This figure includes reserves of oil and oil sands. In terms of these reserves, Canada ranks third in the world after Venezuela and Saudi Arabia.
Canada produces about 3.2 million barrels of oil per day or 450 thousand tons.
In terms of gas, Canada ranks 21st in the world, with estimated 1,754,000,000,000 m3 of natural gas reserves. Yet, Canada is the world's third largest supplier of natural gas, with Alberta accounting for 67% of Canadian production.
